The Green Planet Club of Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB), in association with the Department of Environmental Science, organized its flagship event and an award giving ceremony – 'Green Genius' on November 15, 2017 at IUB’s own campus in Bashundhara, Dhaka.
Professor Milan Pagon, Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University was the Chief Guest of the program while Dr. Md. Abdul Khaleque, Dean, School of Environmental Science and Management, IUB delivered the inaugural speech. Professor Pagon described & underscored the power of hidden knowledge that everyone owns and urged upon all concerned to use these collective power in flourishing new ideas and materializing them to overcome new challenges.
The idea behind 'Green Genius' was to be able to encompass the young minds of the university to get them thinking about how to reduce the overall carbon footprint of the university and how to make the campus greener. The event was panned over the whole semester, in trying to keep the whole of the audience engaged and to increase as much awareness as possible.
Prior to the grand finale, with finally selected 15 proposals, a symposium was held where 15 qualifiers were asked to present exclusive in-depth models along with a detailed posters for visual descriptions. During this round, youth groups, influential in environmental sectors, were invited to provide valuable opinion about innovative ideas of the qualifiers. Eventually, 5 'ideas' were selected to come up as finalists.
In the grand finale of 'Green Genius', 5 finalists were asked to present their ideas through professional manners with in-depth researches and their findings. Ideas were then critiqued upon by experts of different departments from the environmental sector. Finally Faizaa Fariya Hridi, with the idea, “Method of electricity conservation that will require little effort but with a bigger impact, making IUB the leader of conservation for everyone to follow”, became the champion while Mushfiqur Rahman Saad grabbed the 1st runner-up trophy and Samiur Rahman secured the 2nd runner-up position. Geniuses of 4th & 5th positions, Farina Saberin Hoque and Arunima Deepti were also given certificates of recognition for their remarkable ideas.
Dr. K Ayaz Rabbani, Assistant Professor of the Department of Environmental Science, IUB delivered vote of thanks to conclude this spectacular event.
